Client Brief

The clients approached us to redesign their front yard on a prominent corner lot. Their goal was to create a welcoming garden with year-round appeal, while softening the exposure to the street. They wanted a layered, natural look—but it had to be hardy and low-maintenance.

Challenges

This site came with its fair share of tests:

  • Full sun exposure and high winds
  • Harsh summer conditions
  • No natural screening or structure for privacy
  • Concern about plant survival in extreme heat

Adding to the complexity, the garden was installed during late summer, with the most brutal stretch of heat still ahead.

Our Solutions

We focused on smart plant selection, microclimate awareness, and soil preparation to give the garden the best start. Key strategies included

  • Choosing drought-tolerant, sun-loving species
  • Improving soil structure and water retention
  • Designing layers of planting to provide visual interest and some wind protection
  • Positioning plants according to orientation to maximise survival and growth

We also reassured the clients about the natural stress plants experience in their early establishment phase—and the action plan for maintenance.

Outcome

Despite a scorcher of a February (with temps hitting over 40°C), the plants have bounced back beautifully. By early autumn, the garden had settled in well and began showing real signs of thriving. The space now offers privacy, structure, and a natural softness that complement the home’s corner location.

Creating a garden that’s both beautiful and built to last starts with smart planning.
